Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Ballon d'Or

The Portuguese went past Ribery and Messi

Portuguese super captain and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or 2013 by beating close contenders, the Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi and French player Franck Ribery. He last won the award while playing for Manchester United in 2008. He was placed second in Ballon d'Or for the years 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Ronaldo collected the runners up medal for Copa del Ray with Real Madrid in 2013 and also helped his national side, Portugal to qualify for 2014 FIFA World Cup to be held in Brazil. Ronaldo became the only second player in the history to win the Ballon d'Or by not winning any single title during his season,  first being Luis Figo who had won it in 2000.
He was also the UEFA Champion League top goalscorer in 2013 with 12 goals, but his side lost to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final. He reached the landmark of 200 goals for Real Madrid in 197 appearances in 2013.

The Portugal captain won the award with 1,365 points ahead of Lionel Messi, who is with 1,205 points and Frenchman Franck Ribery with 1,127 points. After scoring 65 goals scored for club and country he was the favourite among the three. Here are some words of the winner:

" First of all, I have to say a great thanks to all of my team-mates with the club and the national team, "

Without all of their efforts this would not have been possible. I am very happy, it is very difficult to win this award "

"Everybody that has been involved with me on a personal level, I have to thank. My wife, my friends, my son. It is a tremendously emotional moment. All I can say is thank you to everybody that has been involved."
