Out-of-favour Manchester United wide man Ashley Young is set to be offloaded when the winter transfer market reopens again for business in the new year, with former club Aston Villa thought to be leading the chase to re-sign the Englishman, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.
The inconsistent winger has been with the Premier League champions now since the summer of 2011, when previous Red Devils head coach Sir Alex Ferguson lured Young from Villa Park to Old Trafford on a five-year deal for a fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £18 million.
However, despite the England international enjoying an eye-catching start to his career in the north west, it has all recently gone downhill for Young due to a combination of loss of form, injuries and criticism over the player’s alleged tendency to ‘dive’ in opposition penalty boxes.
All of which now means that new United manager David Moyes has finally lost patience with Young, who made his first start for the struggling Premier League giants for six weeks in their final Uefa Champions League group-phase win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Theatre of Dreams on Tuesday night.
And the Scot is said to be prepared to listen to bids of around £8m for the 28-year-old next month, with the likes of both Newcastle United and Everton said to be joining Villa in the race to sign Young.
